Apple cider vinegar/Drug Interactions:

  • Cardiac glycosidesCardiac glycosides: Based on potential pH altering effects of apple cider vinegar, long-term oral use of apple cider vinegar can decrease potassium levels, increasing the risk of toxicity of cardiac glycosides such as digoxin (Lanoxin?) (2).
  • Insulin preparationsInsulin preparations: Based on potential pH altering effects of apple cider vinegar, long-term oral use of apple cider vinegar can decrease potassium levels, and may add to the potassium-lowering effects of insulin (2).
  • LaxativesLaxatives: Based on potential pH altering effects of apple cider vinegar, long-term oral use of apple cider vinegar can decrease potassium levels, and may add to the potassium-lowering effects of laxatives (2).
  • Potassium-depleting diureticsPotassium-depleting diuretics: Based on potential pH altering effects of apple cider vinegar, long-term oral use of apple cider vinegar can decrease potassium levels, and may add to the potassium-lowering effects of diuretics such as furosemide (Lasix?) (2).
  • Potassium depleting drugsPotassium depleting drugs: Based on potential pH altering effects of apple cider vinegar, long-term oral use or high consumption of apple cider vinegar can decrease potassium levels, and may have additive effects with other agents that deplete potassium (2).

  • Potassium levelsPotassium levels: Based on potential pH altering effects of apple cider vinegar, long-term use or high doses of apple cider vinegar may reduce serum potassium levels and increase urine potassium levels (2).
  • Urinary anion gapUrinary anion gap: In one case report, long-term use of 250mL apple cider vinegar per day was associated with a high positive urinary anion gap (2).
