Amalaki/Drug Interactions:

  • Anticoagulants and antiplateletsAnticoagulants and antiplatelets: Based on in vitro evidence, amalaki may have inhibitory effects on platelets (17). The effects of amalaki and antiplatelet or anticoagulant medications are not well understood.
  • Antidiabetic agentsAntidiabetic agents: Based on animal study, amalaki may reduce blood glucose (8; 24). Theoretically, concurrent use of amalaki and antidiabetic agents may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
  • Antilipemic agentsAntilipemic agents: Based on human and animal study, amalaki reduces levels of cholesterol (10; 8). Theoretically, concurrent use of amalaki and antilipemic agents may have additive cholesterol-lowering effects.
  • Antineoplastic agentsAntineoplastic agents: Based on in vitro and animal study, amalaki may induce tumor shrinkage and tumor cell apoptosis (26; 28; 29; 30; 31; 32; 1; 2; 3). The effects of amalaki and antineoplastic agents are not well understood.
  • Antituberculosis agentsAntituberculosis agents: In vitro, a 50% hydroalcoholic extract of Emblica officinalis fruit (EO-50) demonstrated protective effects against hepatotoxicity induced by the antituberculosis drugs rifampicin (RIF), isoniazid (INH), and pyrazinamide (PZA) (33).
  • DoxorubicinDoxorubicin: Based on in vitro study, alcoholic extract of amalaki may result in cardioprotective effects against doxorubicin toxicity (an approximately twelvefold doxorubicin IC50 increase) (19).
  • Iron saltsIron salts: Based on in vitro study, amalaki forms chelates with iron, reducing the amount of iron absorbed (15).
