Bean pod
Bean pod/Drug Interactions:
AntibioticsAntibiotics: According to in vitro study, bean extract may exhibit antibacterial effects on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella oxytoca, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Listeria monocytogenes (1). The use of bean pod with other antibacterial drugs may theoretically have an additive effect. AntidiabeticsAntidiabetics: According to a human study, intake of bean pod mixture made of bean pods and leaves of Morus alba and Vaccinum myrtillus may cause hypoglycemia (11). Antiobesity agentsAntiobesity agents: According to clinical trials, bean pod extract may interfere with the break down of complex carbohydrates, by blocking alpha-amylase activity and thereby reducing gastrointestinal absorption of these carbohydrates (13). AntiprotozoalsAntiprotozoals: According to in vitro research, Perla bean extract may inhibit the growth of Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, and Trichomonas vaginalis (1). Concomitant use of Perla bean with other antiparasitic agents may theoretically have additive effects. AntiviralsAntivirals: According to in vitro research in cultured human leucocytes, phytohemagglutinin in kidney bean extract induced an interferon-like virus inhibitor substance against Sindbis virus (3). DiureticsDiuretics: According to secondary sources, bean pods have diuretic effects in animal and humans.Drugs used for osteoporosisDrugs used for osteoporosis: Methanolic extract of Phaseolus vulgaris L. seeds (MPV) in combination with 0.15mg/kg of estradiol has shown to significantly increase bone and ash density, bone mechanical strength, and bone calcium levels (4). EstrogensEstrogens: Methanolic extract of Phaseolus vulgaris L. seeds (MPV) in combination with 0.15mg/kg of estradiol has shown to significantly increase bone and ash density, bone mechanical strength, and bone calcium levels (4). LaxativesLaxatives: According to secondary sources, alpha-amylase inhibitors in bean pod may cause diarrhea, due to accumulation of undigested starch in the colon.Bean pod/Herb/Supplement Interactions:
AntibacterialsAntibacterials: According to in vitro research, bean extract may exhibit antibacterial effects on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella oxytoca, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Listeria monocytogenes (1). Bean pod extract may theoretically have a synergistic effect when administered in combination with other antibacterial herbs or supplements. Antiobesity agentsAntiobesity agents: According to clinical trials, bean pod extract may promote weight loss by interfering with the breakdown of complex carbohydrates, thereby reducing the availability of carbohydrate-derived calories (13). AntioxidantsAntioxidants: According to animal research, Phaseolus vulgaris pod extract (200mg/kg of body weight) significantly reduced hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (2). AntiparasiticsAntiparasitics: According to in vitro research, Perla bean extract may inhibit the growth of Giardia lamblia, Entamoebahistolytica, and Trichomonas vaginalis (1).
