Clay/Drug Interactions:

  • CimetidineCimetidine: When administered simultaneously, clay has been found to inhibit the absorption of cimetidine (Tagamet?) (43).
  • QuinineQuinine: In one in vitro study, kaolin reduced the bioavailability of quinine and two types of tannin by about 30% (44).
  • Clay/Herb/Supplement Interactions:

  • IronIron: Clay has been demonstrated to interfere with iron absorption (7).
  • Clay/Food Interactions:

  • Clay/Lab Interactions:

  • Iron, calcium, magnesiumIron, calcium, magnesium: Clay may act as a cation exchange resin. Calcium and magnesium in clay are replaced by iron, making iron unabsorbable because of formation of insoluble iron complexes (9). Iron deficiency may result, and levels of calcium or magnesium may increase.
  • PotassiumPotassium: Clay possesses potassium-binding capacity, and has been associated with hypokalemia (6; 7; 8; 33).
