Hyssop

Hyssop/Drug Interactions:

  • AntiepilepticsAntiepileptics: Hyssop may lower the seizure threshold, and theoretically may interact with antiepileptic medications (9; 10).
  • Anti-hyperglycemicsAnti-hyperglycemics: Daflon? 500 (a mixture of diosmin [90%] and hesperidin [10%]) may interact additively with anti-hyperglycemic drugs (11; 12).
  • Anti-hyperlipidemia drugsAnti-hyperlipidemia drugs: Hyssop constituents oleanolic acid and ursolic acid have recognized anti-hyperlipidemic properties and may interact additively with anti-hyperlipidemia drugs (13).
  • AntiviralsAntivirals: Early studies showed that crude extracts of hyssop produced antiviral activity against herpes simplex and HIV-1 (6; 7). Therefore, hyssop may theoretically interact with antiviral medications.
  • GlucocorticoidsGlucocorticoids: Decoction of qingre huoxue, which includes hyssop, may interact additively with glucocorticoids (8).
  • ImmunosuppressantsImmunosuppressants: Hyssop is proposed to possess immunomodulatory activity and may theoretically interact with immunosuppressant medications.
  • Medications that affect seizure thresholdMedications that affect seizure threshold: Hyssop is proposed to affect the seizure threshold and may therefore theoretically interact with medications that affect the seizure threshold (9; 10).
  • Hyssop/Herb/Supplement Interactions:

  • Antiepileptic herbsAntiepileptic herbs: Hyssop may lower the seizure threshold, and theoretically may interact with antiepileptic herbs (9; 10).

  • Decoction of qingre huoxue recipe (QHR)Decoction of qingre huoxue recipe (QHR): QHR contains hyssop and therefore may theoretically cause additive effects when taken together.
  • Herbs that affect seizure thresholdHerbs that affect seizure threshold: Hyssop is proposed to affect the seizure threshold and may therefore theoretically interact with herbs that affect the seizure threshold (9; 10).
  • Immunosuppressant herbsImmunosuppressant herbs: Hyssop is proposed to possess immunomodulatory activity and may therefore theoretically interact with immunosuppressant medications.
  • Hyssop/Food Interactions:

  • Insufficient available evidence.
  • Hyssop/Lab Interactions:

  • Serum cholesterol levelsSerum cholesterol levels: Hyssop constituents oleanolic acid and ursolic acid have recognized antihyperlipidemic properties and may lower serum cholesterol levels (13).
  • Serum glucose levelsSerum glucose levels: Daflon? 500 (a mixture of diosmin [90%] and hesperidin [10%]) may lower serum glucose levels (11; 12).
