Lychee/Drug Interactions:

  • AnalgesicsAnalgesics: In human research, supplementation with oligonol, a lychee fruit-derived polyphenol, significantly attenuated the feeling of three kinds of pains (muscular/articular pain, lumbago, and menstrual pain) (18).
  • Anticoagulants and antiplateletsAnticoagulants and antiplatelets: Based on a review, lychee may exert cardiovascular protective effects, due to the presence of saponins, through decreased blood coagulation (8).
  • Antidiabetic agentsAntidiabetic agents: In animal studies, lychee seed water extract significantly lowered fasting blood glucose and two-hour blood glucose after an oral glucose tolerance test, and improved impaired glucose tolerance (9).
  • Anti-inflammatory agentsAnti-inflammatory agents: Based on animal studies, lychee extract may possess anti-inflammatory activity, possibly due to inhibition of the cyclooxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism (14).
  • Antilipemic agentsAntilipemic agents: In animal studies, lychee seed water extract significantly decreased the levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides, and increased the content of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C and the HDL-C:TC ratio) (9).
  • Antineoplastic agentsAntineoplastic agents: Based on in vitro studies, lychee fruit may have antineoplastic, antiproliferative, and cytotoxic properties (19; 20). Based on in vitro evidence, lychee fruit pericarp may display a dose- and time-dependent inhibitory effect on human breast cancer cells (21).
  • Antiviral agentsAntiviral agents: Lychee fruit may display antiviral effects (19). Extracts from lychee have been shown to inhibit the expression of HbsAg and HbeAg in HepG 2.2.15 cells in vitro (22).
  • Cardiovascular agentsCardiovascular agents: Based on a review, lychee may exert cardiovascular protective effects, due to the presence of saponins, through inhibition of the formation of lipid peroxides in the cardiac muscle or in the liver; influence the function of enzymes contained in them; and decrease blood coagulation, cholesterol, and sugar levels in blood (8).
  • Immunomodulating agentsImmunomodulating agents: According to a recent report, lychee may have immunomodulatory activity, as measured by increased splenocyte proliferation (23).
