Myrcia/Drug Interactions:

  • AmiodaroneAmiodarone: Theoretically, M. uniflora may interact with amiodarone causing either an increase or decrease in hypothyroid effects.
  • Antihyperglycemics, insulinAntihyperglycemics, insulin: Based on animal and human study, M. uniflora and M. multiflora may lower glucose levels and interact with other glucose-lowering medications (3; 2; 4; 5).
  • Antihypertensive drugsAntihypertensive drugs: Myrcia may augment the activity of other antihypertensive agents due to the potential for hypotensive effects.
  • Thyroid drugsThyroid drugs: Based on in vitro study, M. uniflora may increase the effects of medications for used hyperthyroidism leading to hypothyroidism (1). Because of potential effects on thyroid hormones, patients who begin taking M. uniflora may require dosage adjustments on their existing medications due to changes in metabolism.
  • Myrcia/Herb/Supplement Interactions:

  • HypoglycemicsHypoglycemics: Based on animal and human study, M. uniflora and M. multiflora may lower glucose levels and interact with other glucose-lowering herbs and supplements (3; 2; 4; 5).
  • HypotensivesHypotensives: Myrcia may augment the activity of other antihypertensive agents due to the potential for hypotensive effects.
  • Thyroid herbs and supplementsThyroid herbs and supplements: Based on in vitro study, M. uniflora may increase the effects of medications used for hyperthyroidism leading to hypothyroidism (1).
  • Myrcia/Food Interactions:

  • Hypoglycemic episodesHypoglycemic episodes: Alpha glucosidase inhibitors work by blocking the breakdown of starch into sugar and slowing the breakdown of sucrose therefore delaying the rise in blood sugar after a meal. In cases of hypoglycemia, table sugar (sucrose) or non-diet soft drinks will not work. Theoretically, patients taking Myrcia uniflora for diabetes would need to use a source of glucose, honey, or drink fruit juice to relieve symptoms.
  • Thyroid effectsThyroid effects: Patient should limit foods high in iodine, such as seaweeds, while taking Myrcia uniflora due to potential thyroid effects.
  • Myrcia/Lab Interactions:

  • Blood glucose testsBlood glucose tests: Myrcia uniflora and Myrcia multiflora may alter blood glucose readings (3; 2; 4; 5). Patients should check blood glucose regularly.
  • Blood pressure readingsBlood pressure readings: Myrcia may alter blood pressure readings.
  • Thyroid function testsThyroid function tests: Thyroid function tests should be performed in patients taking Myrcia uniflora (1).
