Natto

Nattokinase/Drug Interactions:

  • Anticoagulants and antiplateletsAnticoagulants and antiplatelets: Research from in vitro and in vivo trials suggests that natto and nattokinase possess thrombolytic activity (1; 6; 2; 7; 8; 5). However, some natto and some nattokinase supplements reportedly contain vitamin K (between 0.5 and 2.6mcg/g), which can antagonize the effects of anticoagulants like warfarin, according to secondary sources.
  • AntihypertensivesAntihypertensives: In clinical study, decreases in systolic (9; 10; 11) and diastolic blood pressure (9) have been observed after treatment with nattokinase. Theoretically, concurrent use of nattokinase and antihypertensives may have additive blood pressure-lowering effects and increase the risk of hypotension.

Evidence from in vitro and in vivo trials suggests that natto and nattokinase may affect soluble plasma fibrinogen (1).
