Hormonal Agents

Hormonal Agents/Nutrient Depletion:

  • CalciumCalcium: Based on human evidence, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) alone (as piperazine estrone sulfate ? medroxyprogesterone acetate) may be associated with a fall in calcium absorption efficiency (8845601). The bone preserving effects of estrogen treatment may be increased by calcium supplementation. Estrogen generally increases supplemental calcium absorption in postmenopausal women.
  • MelatoninMelatonin: Based on human and animal evidence, medications, such as hormone replacement therapy, that reduce levels of vitamin B6 in the body may also deplete melatonin levels (8872867, 272672). Based on human evidence, somatostatin may alter synthesis or release of melatonin (10475150). Based on human evidence, hormone replacement therapy is reported to cause a decrease in daily melatonin secretion without disturbing circadian rhythm (12080285, 12080286).
