Acidophilus

L. acidophilus/Nutrient Depletion:

  • GeneralGeneral: L. acidophilus, which is found to naturally occur in the human gastrointestinal tract, is considered to be a beneficial organism, as it produces vitamin B, vitamin K (160; 161), lactase, and antimicrobial substances such as acidolin, acidolphilin, lactocidin, and bacteriocin. A loss of this natural gut flora may theoretically adversely affect digestion and nutrient production and uptake.
  • LipidsLipids: According to human research, L. acidophilus may decrease blood lipids, including cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins, and triglycerides (70; 129; 71).
