Uses
- It is used as a laxative to clean out the colon before an exam.
- It is used to stop or treat low phosphate levels.
- It is used to treat hard stools (constipation).
- As a laxative, sodium phosphate pulls water into the small bowel.
- It is a source of phosphate for the body.
Dosing
How to take
- Bowel exams:
- Follow what your doctor has told you to do.
- Drink clear liquids for 12 hours before starting this drug.
- Take with a full glass of water.
- Drink lots of noncaffeine liquids unless told to drink less liquid by your doctor.
- Hard stools (constipation):
- Take on an empty stomach.
- There is a liquid (solution) if you cannot swallow pills.
- Those who have feeding tubes may also use the liquid. Flush the feeding tube before and after this drug is given.
- Mix dose with 1 cup of cool water.
- Take with a full glass of water.
- Do not take more doses for at least 24 hours.
- Use enema rectally.
- Shot:
- It is given as a shot into a vein over a period of time.
