Uses
- It is used to stop gouty arthritis.
- It is used to stop gout attacks. It may take 6 weeks to see the full effect.
- It is used to stop high uric acid levels during chemo.
- It is used to stop kidney problems caused by gout.
- It is used to avoid side effects due to fluorouracil.
- It is used to treat kidney stones.
- Allopurinol lowers uric acid.
Dosing
How to take
- Take after meals.
- Drink lots of noncaffeine liquids unless told to drink less liquid by your doctor.
- There is a liquid (suspension) if you cannot swallow pills. Shake well before use.
- Those who have feeding tubes may also use the liquid. Flush the feeding tube before and after this drug is given.
- Keep taking this drug even if you are having a gout attack.
- Shot:
- It is given as a shot into a vein over a period of time.
