Fly agaric

Agaric/Drug Interactions:

  • GeneralGeneral: Based on reported adverse effects of agaric and its chemical constituents, significant drug interactions should be expected.
  • Nephrotoxic drugsNephrotoxic drugs: There is one case report of poisoning with the agaric Cortinarius orellanus in Czechoslovakia; the authors report nephrotoxic effects (18).
  • Agaric/Herb/Supplement Interactions:

  • GeneralGeneral: Based on reported toxic effects of agaric and its chemical constituents, significant drug interactions should be expected.
  • Nephrotoxic herbs and supplementsNephrotoxic herbs and supplements: There is one case report of poisoning with the agaric Cortinarius orellanus in Czechoslovakia; the authors report nephrotoxic effects (18).
  • SeleniumSelenium: Agaric is abundant in selenium (19).
  • Agaric/Food Interactions:

  • Insufficient available evidence.
  • Agaric/Lab Interactions:

  • Liver function testsLiver function tests: Biochemical signs of hepatocellular damage, hepatic encephalopathy, fulfilling the criteria for fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) have been reported. Two died and one patient underwent successful urgent liver transplantation. All FHF patients had a prothrombin index below 10% and increased creatine. Transferral to a hepatological department with access to liver transplantation should be considered if abnormal biochemical liver function develops (2).
  • Prothrombin timeProthrombin time: Biochemical signs of hepatocellular damage, hepatic encephalopathy, fulfilling the criteria for fulminant hepatic failure (FHF) have been reported. Two died and one patient underwent successful urgent liver transplantation. All FHF patients had a prothrombin index below 10% and increased creatine. Transferal to a hepatological department with access to liver transplantation should be considered if abnormal biochemical liver function develops (2).
  • Renal function testsRenal function tests: There is one case report of poisoning with the agaric Cortinarius orellanus in Czechoslovakia; the authors report nephrotoxic effects (18).
