Jackfruit

Jackfruit/Drug Interactions:

  • AntibioticsAntibiotics: Based on laboratory tests, various jackfruit plant parts, including the bark, wood, leaves, fruit, and seeds, may exhibit a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity (1).
  • Anticoagulants and antiplateletsAnticoagulants and antiplatelets: Based on in vitro studies and a preliminary study in Rhesus monkeys and humans, jackfruit seeds may have coagulant activity (4; 2).
  • Antidiabetic agentsAntidiabetic agents: Based on a clinical study, jackfruit leaves may improve glucose tolerance in normal and type 2 diabetes patients (9).
  • AntifungalsAntifungals: Based on an in vitro study, jackfruit may inhibit the growth of Fusarium moniliforme and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (2). However, another laboratory test found no such effect (1).
  • Antiviral agentsAntiviral agents: Based on an in vitro study, jackfruit may exhibit inhibitory activity with a cytopathic effect towards herpes simplex virus type 2, varicella-zoster virus, and cytomegalovirus (3).
  • Fertility agentsFertility agents: Based on a rat study and anecdotal observations, jackfruit seeds may markedly inhibit libido, sexual arousal, sexual vigor, and sexual performance (induce mild erectile dysfunction) in males (10). However, jackfruit seeds do not appear to alter ejaculating competence and fertility.
  • ImmunoglobulinsImmunoglobulins: Based on several in vitro studies, jackfruit and jackfruit seed lectins may selectively bind to human IgA1, but not to human IgA2 (13; 14; 8).
  • ImmunosuppressantsImmunosuppressants: Based on several in vitro studies, jackfruit and jackfruit seeds may have immunostimulative effects (4; 5; 6; 7; 8; 3).
  • Impotence agentsImpotence agents: Based on a rat study and anecdotal observations, jackfruit seeds may markedly inhibit libido, sexual arousal, sexual vigor, and sexual performance (induce mild erectile dysfunction) in males (10).
